The Civilian Conservation Corps built the Red Ives Ranger Station on the St. Joe River in 1933.

This gracious woman (with one of her deputies) has run Red Ives for ten years.

She arrives early in the spring and stays until October, weather and road depending.  She gave me directions to my survey the night before and when I made it back two days later she gave me a hug - badly needed!

William Morland, the Wild Man of Idaho, stole rations from Red Ives twice before the road was put in and once after. Forest Service Rangers eventually caught him in 1944 (after he had spent thirteen years alone in the wilderness). Times have changed. Had Bill been hungry these days, the current Ranger would have given him anything he needed.
